Europa

Europa is one of Jupiter’s largest moons and is notable for its smooth, icy surface, which is believed to cover a subsurface ocean of liquid water. Discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei, Europa is the sixth-largest moon in the solar system and has a diameter of about 3,121 kilometers (1,940 miles). Scientists are particularly interested in Europa because its ocean may harbor the chemicals necessary for life, making it a major focus of astrobiological investigation. The moon’s surface features include linear cracks and ridges, suggesting geological activity beneath the ice. Europa’s potential for supporting life and its intriguing geology make it a target for future exploration missions.
